April 13th

Today’s task is to take a walk…

This is a memory of many walks on the cliffs near Cuckmere Haven in East Sussex.

I start at Inspiration Point,
the summer heat
drums hard on parched grass.
I take the right fork,
walking a well-worn path
through the ancient stands
of broom and bramble.
Hawthorns, hammocked by ermine,
cast spiny shadows
on the springy moss
carpeting the cliffs.
Mounting a rise,
the sky seems to sink down
into the sea,
Tides biting into the
yielding ground of the Downs.
Below, greening boulders crumble,
where they tumbled,
on beds of splintered flint.
Lashed by scouring foam,
the starkness of chalk
marks the end of my walk.
